Walt Disney Co. announced the closure of its Star Wars-themed hotel, “Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser,” in Orlando, just less than two years after its opening, according to a Reuters report.
The luxury immersive hotel, which drew criticism from Star Wars fans for its steep price, will shut down in September. The announcement comes amidst Disney’s commitment to cut costs by $5.5 billion to bolster the profitability of its streaming TV business.
Disney’s decision also includes scrapping plans for a near $1 billion corporate campus in Florida, citing “changing business conditions”.
Despite the closure, a Disney spokesperson emphasized that the Starcruiser experience had set a new bar for innovation and immersive entertainment, and the learnings will be utilized to create future experiences that can reach a broader audience.
